Abstract

ISIS is one of the Takfiri groups that seeks to attract followers through religious beliefs. The doctrinal foundations of this group can be analyzed from various perspectives. One distinctive aspect of ISIS compared to other Takfiri movements is its use of the end time and Mahdist symbols—such as the lineage of the promised Mahdi, the geographical location of the apocalyptic conflicts, and the symbols or flags associated with the Mahdi. By aligning these elements with its own movement, ISIS attempts to sanctify its actions, portray itself as the savior of the end times, and thereby attract more followers. Such research is essential for future studies and behavioral analysis of emerging extremist groups. Moreover, given the potential risk of individuals from various countries joining such organizations, identifying and analyzing these doctrinal foundations can help raise awareness in society and prevent recruitment. This study, employing a descriptive–analytical method, seeks to extract and critically assess the narrations of the end time used by ISIS. The findings indicate that the group’s use of these narrations suffers from serious methodological and interpretative flaws. There is no correspondence between the cited narrations and the genuine signs of the end times. Rather, ISIS exploits these symbols merely to legitimize its actions; therefore, the group cannot be regarded as a true representative or savior of the end times.
